The G7 FSOI has been recognized as a framework for collaborative ocean science in the establishment of the G7 Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Management Alliance, launched on 23-24 April 2026 as part of the ministerial meeting of the G7 environmental track, held in Paris. This Alliance seeks to strengthen cooperation on effective MPA management and address challenges related to financing, governance, monitoring, and surveillance.

The official statement of the Alliance acknowledges the importance of supporting robust and long-term scientifically based monitoring as one of five key structural opportunities to further enhance the effectiveness and benefits of MPA implementation and management.

The G7 FSOI National Focal Points will meet to determine how to take this outcome from the ministerial meeting forward. The G7 FSOI work plan is responsive to the priorities of G7 members outlined in statements like these, with the aim to enhance global cooperation for ocean observing and sharing of data and information required for the health of our seas and Ocean, for weather and climate forecasting, and for the development of a sustainable Blue Economy.
